It was going to be the trip of a lifetime. Sarah Jones (23) had booked her dream cruise nine months earlier and when she began to climb the stairs of the BMI plane all she was thinking about was two weeks of fun in the sun.

Strange how a seemingly small event can change your life forever, but that’s what happened to Sarah on that fateful day. As she settled into the very snug middle seat of a row of three, she felt mild annoyance towards the airline for skimping so much on space, but, hey, she was off to cruise the Med and nothing could dampen her high spirits. Above her, the fasten seat belt sign flashed up and she automatically fumbled in the seat to find both ends. Pulling it round her, she noticed the clasp wouldn’t meet across her stomach and she thought it must have been twisted or she had one end of the belt from the other seat.
