What a star! – Zarek

Bringing childhood lifestyle and weight issues under control, with Russell Hemmings

Nine year old Zarek is a livewire. He’s full of energy and hard to keep up with. But this wasn’t the case when I first met him. I had been working with his mum Iqra, successfully helping her lose weight on my specialist Why Weight programme, when she asked me if I would help her young son. She had seen the work I did with Hamid, the amazing young man who lost 30kg on my weight loss programme designed especially for kids. She had been struck by how similar Hamid’s story was to that of her own little boy Zarek. Addicted to junk food and video games, he had piled on the weight and his mum was struggling to turn things around for him.

There’s nothing I like better than working with kids. It’s so rewarding to change young lives, because it changes futures. I love the unique way they look at the world and helping them to harness those powerful imaginations in a positive way can make such a difference to their lives in the long term. So I was more than happy to meet young Zarek.

In the beginning it was important for me to put Iqra’s mind at rest. She was apprehensive about the idea of putting Zarek ‘on a diet’, but I explained that the experience would be very similar to her own. He wouldn’t be on a diet – I absolutely don’t believe that fad diets work, especially where children are concerned, but rather the hypnotherapy would completely change the way he felt about food and exercise, just as it had done for her. By re-programming Zarek’s mind, he would naturally choose to eat healthily and want to exercise. I also spent a lot of time discussing things with Zarek. This part of the therapy is so important, because it helps the young person to identify what the real issue is that drives their over eating.

It was so great to spend some time with him and his mum at the park. To see that young boy running about without a care in the world, not huffing and puffing like before, really brought it home to me that losing weight in a natural and managed way has given him a chance to be a happy go lucky kid again!

Zarek is a ‘totally new kid’. He has lost 7kg’s and is happier and far more confident. He has completely ditched the junk food and loves nothing better than kicking a football around with his friends. Exercise has become part of his regular daily activities as has eating only natural home cooked food, something which the whole family has benefitted from.
