Arachnophobia

As most of us know, arachnophobia is the fear of spiders. When asked to name a phobia it probably the one that first springs to mind, yet it is one phobia that isn't taken too seriously.

Even though we've all seen images of big hairy tarantulas we live in a country where spiders don't grow to huge proportions and where there are no indigenous species with venom powerful enough to do us any harm. Therefore, arachnophobia in the UK is generally an irrational fear and, in common with many phobias, is a learned response which can just as easily be unlearned. It is often brought on by an unpleasant experience or more likely with arachnophobia if there was an instance of panic or anxiety during an encounter with a spider during which the probability of "learning" a phobia is enhanced. An example could be seeing someone perceived as strong and capable panicking or in disarray at the sight of a small spider.

People who suffer from arachnophobia will check floors, ceilings and corners when they enter buildings or rooms. They will avoid situations in which they may be confronted by a spider - such as cleaning, dusting, going in the loft or garage or visiting a zoo.

  • Hypnotherapy helps eradicate arachnophobia by enabling the sufferer to develop a new perspective of the fear that has been programmed into their subconscious mind. With the use of Neuro Linguistic Programming, arachnophobic responses are "unlearned" and replaced with a positive approach to situations in which the phobia might previously have become heightened.

How can hypnotherapy help?

Hypnotherapy helps eradicate arachnophobia by enabling the sufferer to develop a new perspective of the fear that has been programmed into their subconscious mind. With the use of Neuro Linguistic Programming, arachnophobic responses are "unlearned" and replaced with a positive approach to situations in which the phobia might previously have become heightened. Because the techniques used in treating arachnophobia are powerful and direct, they produce positive results that are noticeable early on.

What a former arachnophobic says...

“For as long as I can remember I have been scared of spider, but as I got older my phobia got worse. It was starting to control my life and I would avoid situations where I thought it was likely I would see a spider. I wouldn’t park my car in the garage because I knew there would be spiders in there and I would have to walk past. I would leave the house if I saw a spider and there was nobody else in to get rid of it. I would constantly be looking around me and scan rooms for spiders when I walked into them.

My phobia was becoming embarrassing because it would make me so anxious when I saw a spider that I couldn’t control my actions, and would completely overreact to the situation. I knew my phobia was causing me to act irrationally, but there was nothing family, friends or I could do or say to make a difference to the way I felt. I decided to visit The Bridge Hypnotherapy Clinic and after just a couple of sessions I noticed a big difference. Now I can control my feelings and deal with spiders rationally like most people. Spiders will never be my best friends but I can now carry on with my life as normal without the barriers I was experiencing before.”
