Fear of Driving

As the roads seem forever busier with horror stories of accidents, road rage and traffic jams, it's no wonder driving has become more of a chore and less of a pleasure. For some of us, though, the thought of that chore instills feelings of stress, anxiety and panic, so much so that we avoid cars or driving or even learning to drive. This fear can be brought on by a lack of confidence or by an unpleasant experience in a car such as an accident.

Even though driving may be unpleasant at times – the thought of rush hour is enough to raise anyone's blood pressure – we should all be able to enjoy the benefits of driving should we so wish, and if fear is getting in the way then it should be removed.

Driving would be a much happier experience if you were able to drive where you like, in traffic, over bridges, on motorways, etc, with a feeling of anxiety-free confidence.

People whi have a fear of driving may experience the following symptoms:
  • Excessive sweating or a cold sweat
  • Nausea
  • Palpitations
  • Breathlessness
  • Trembling
  • A dryness of the mouth
  • Dizziness
  • A loss of control

How can hypnotherapy help ?

As with the treatment of other phobias, a course of Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy is the best way to beat the fear of driving. In a relaxed state you will learn how to suppress feelings of stress and anxiety and dissociate them from driving. Your subconscious mind will discard negative thought processes associated with driving and replace them with positive ones.

Gradually you will overcome your fear of driving and be able to enjoy the independence of using a car.

Hypnotherapy is very successful in the treatment of phobias and will most certainly help you beat your fear of driving and give you confidence to get behind the wheel. It could even give you the confidence to further your driving pleasure by going on a 'nervous driver' course to learn the practical tricks that will make driving less stressful.

What those with a fear of driving say...

“Hi Russ, just wanted to say thanks for all your help with my fear of driving, I couldn’t have done it on my own, after all, I waited 15 years to find someone who could help me. Thank you so much and all the best.”

“One evening my husband and I had a car accident due to an oil spillage on the road. Although shaken and upset, I had no idea how this incident would affect me in the coming weeks. Initially, I felt okay about driving, but soon afterwards became very anxious about getting behind the wheel. I began to avoid driving along particular roads or at certain times and couldn’t cope with someone driving up behind me. I would begin to feel extreme panic and fear that I would lose control of the car. I would over to the side of the road many times – even on short journeys. It got to the point when I would leave the car at home and use public transport. I recognised that I needed help and found The Bridge Hypnotherapy Clinic on the internet – I am so glad I did. After the first session I felt significantly calmer and I am now able to drive without anxiety."
