Fear of Needles

Fear of needles is not as straightforward as it sounds as the phobia can take one of four forms.

There is associated fear – which in common with other phobias is brought on by a traumatic experience; resistive fear – where the phobia of needles stems from the fear of being restrained or not in control; hyperalgesic fear – which is a fear of pain and sensitivity to pain and is triggered by the thought that needles will cause pain; and finally vasovagal fear – which affects about 50 per cent of sufferers and is the pure fear of needles or sharp implements. Vasovagal fear can lead to fainting at the sight or thought of a needle.

  • Aichmophobia
  • Enetophobia

While many of us rarely need injections, blood tests or innoculation there are some people for whom it is a vital part of their everyday lives. Living with a fear of needles is bad enough if you fall into the first category – you may not be able to visit a dentist, avoid doctors and even pregnancy for fear of having to have an injection. However, if your health and life depended on regular injections, such as being diabetic, then a fear of needles could truly be life threatening.

The good news is that you don't have to live with a fear of needles – or any other fear for that matter. A course of sessions with a specialist cognitive behavioural hypnotherapist will help you beat that fear so that it no longer impacts on your life or your health.

How can hypnotherapy help?

Once the origin of your fear is established, the hypnotherapist can get to work on reprogramming your subconscious mind and eradicating your phobia. In comfort and relaxation, your mind will learn to release its grip on the fear that causes you to be anxious or to panic so that you will be free to enjoy a rational perspective of needles and in turn a healthier, happier life. You will find that the next time you require an injection or blood test you will remain calm, stress free and untroubled. In fact, you will be amazed at how different and relaxed you feel. What former needle phobics say...

“I was on the verge of giving up a promising medical career all because of my fear of needles. I was so afraid that I hadn’t had an injection or blood test for more than 10 years. I couldn’t even administer an injection to patients. Thankfully, I went to see Russell and through a course of treatment at his clinic I have overcome my phobia – my career and life is back on track. I would never have made it as a doctor without his help.”

Dr Aisling Martin

“I always had issues with needles and it was only recently – when I  was meant to go for a blood test and didn’t do it out of fear – that I decided that I had to sort out the problem. I decided to visit Russell’s hypnotherapy clinic and after the first couple of sessions I felt more relaxed and when I thought about past experiences I wasn’t so stressed out about those memories. The biggest ‘break-through’ came on Christmas Eve when I had my ears pierced for the first time. I never thought I would have ever done that.”
