Russell’s Real Lives
Taking Back Control - Zinia’s Story
Anxiety, panic attacks and self-esteem issues seem to punctuate many more young people’s lives now than they have ever done previously. When bright, academically gifted, high-flying Zinia was struck with crippling anxiety – that became so out of control that it prevented her living life to the full and was jeopardising her studies – she knew she needed to seek immediate assistance to change her situation.
Zinia takes up her story “If you asked me what I was scared of, I’d probably be unable to tell you - because I was afraid of everything! It was a struggle on a daily basis to wake up and try to do normal things. I was young, flying through my Aerospace Engineering degree and enjoying everything life threw at me. Everybody who knows me would say that I’m happy, upbeat and eager to take on the world - but it was a year after I started university that my anxiety started to drain that away from me. Although I’m sure my anxiety issue had been bubbling under the surface since I finished high school, the constant stress and pressure that came from doing well in my degree caused the problem to tip over into daily life.”
She continues “Car journeys were particularly difficult for me, as I would think negative thoughts the whole time, I’d fear everyone and everything. I felt like I was never in control of my own feelings. I knew I needed help. The intense and confusing symptoms of anxiety would creep up on me until I couldn’t ignore it any longer. I couldn’t get through the day without breaking down and crying. It seemed every day would leave me more fragile than the last.”
Finding and working with Russell “It took six months to eventually confide in my family. Revealing my problem to my parents was the hardest part; they have always encouraged me to be the best person I could be, so how could I show them how weak I was feeling? I just didn’t want to let them down. When I told my mother she went into full ‘mum mode’ and was focused on finding the best way to help me. My father was also supportive, and he was the one who suggested getting in touch with Russell as he’d read one of his articles in Friday Magazine.”
Experiencing anxiety and panic attacks affects you physically, you may experience a racing heart or a shortness of breath (or even fear you’re having a heart-attack as I feared myself many years ago), a feeling of nausea and deep general unease.
Zinia later explained that she also had a very sensory anxiety experience - the sounds, colours and lights of the outside world would mingle together to confuse her, causing her an overwhelming feeling of being detached from reality. All leaving her emotionally drained and struggling to function properly.
The sessions from Zinia’s perspective“Before the first session, I was extremely nervous. I’d never spoken about my issues with anybody other than my parents, However, right from that initial session with Russell, I felt immediately like here was someone who truly understood. The relief was incredible. I left knowing that here was someone who had offered me a way to change things. Russell listened and never judged or made me feel self-conscious. Best of all, he explained every step of the way how anxiety worked to destabilize a person physically and emotionally. I knew right from that point Russell was going to help me. During each subsequent session, Russell encouraged me to take my time to explore so that I could get to the source of what was happening to me. He helped me to write notes based on what I felt in certain situations and what the triggers were. He offered me fascinating insight into the nature of my anxiety. After only four sessions, I began to notice real positive change in the way I was behaving.”
How have things changed? “Before working with Russell, most days would not pass without a panic attack and tears. It felt like I had no choice in how I was feeling or living my life. When situations arise that previously would have triggered an attack, I know exactly how to handle them and most importantly how to handle myself.”
Fast-forward a few months since I worked with Zinia and I receive the following heart-warming message from her… “Hi Russell, I was just on my way home from my last panic free exam! I figured I'd update you on how things are going lately. Well, even if I have assignments and deadlines I'm able to calmly manage my way through them now. I'm not nervous before exams anymore or afraid of travelling alone. Breaking that loop of anxiety and low mood was one of the hardest things I've ever done and I couldn't have done it without you. I just needed to express my gratitude for your guidance and all the things you taught me. You changed my life. You really did.”
